Why G2 and Capterra matter more for AI than for SEO

G2 and Capterra have always mattered for B2B software. Their role in AI search citations is materially different. Here's what we've seen and what to do.

For most of the last decade, G2 and Capterra have been classic mid-funnel assets. A prospect already shortlisting your product would land there, read reviews and decide whether to take a demo. Useful, important, but rarely a top SEO priority because the listings ranked for branded terms and category roundups but not much else.

That picture is now wrong. In AI search, G2 and Capterra have moved from useful to load-bearing. We are spending more client time on review platforms than at any point in our agency’s history, and the data behind that is hard to ignore.

What changed in citation behaviour

We started seeing the shift in mid-2024 and it has only intensified since. When we run prompt audits across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, G2 and Capterra appear consistently inside the top citations for any prompt that asks for category roundups, comparisons or alternatives.

Some patterns we have logged across our SaaS clients:

  • For “best tools for ” prompts, G2 was cited in 70% of responses across four LLM surfaces
  • For ” alternatives” prompts, G2 sat in the first three sources nearly every time
  • For ” reviews” prompts, G2 was usually cited above the vendor’s own site
  • Capterra appeared less often but more consistently for SMB-targeted categories

This is materially different from organic search behaviour, where G2 listings rank for narrower sets of queries. The difference is that LLMs treat these platforms as authoritative aggregators in a way Google’s classic ranking system does not always.

Why the platforms get treated as authoritative

Three reasons that we have inferred from the citation patterns:

Structured comparison data. G2 and Capterra publish category pages with consistent metadata, ratings, feature comparison tables and pricing summaries. That format is exactly what a model wants when answering a comparison query.

Aggregated user voice. Hundreds of independent reviews per product give models a stable view of strengths and weaknesses. A vendor’s own page can claim anything. A G2 page averages out the marketing.

Currency. Active products on G2 see fresh reviews monthly. That recency signal matters for retrieval, where models prefer to ground answers in current data.

The combined effect is that G2 has become a de facto category index that LLMs trust more than any individual vendor site. That should change how much energy you put into it.

What an active G2 strategy actually looks like

This is where most teams underinvest. A profile that exists is not the same as a profile that performs. The work we do with clients across G2 and Capterra:

Profile completeness. Every field filled, screenshots current, integrations listed, pricing clear where allowed. The model lifts these fields directly into summaries.

Category placement. G2’s category structure is fluid. Being in the right grid, in the right segments, matters because the grid pages get cited. Reviewing your category coverage twice a year is sensible.

Review velocity. Recency beats volume. Five reviews this quarter signals an active product. Fifty from 2022 does not. We set a quarterly target with clients and run a structured outreach to recent customers.

Review depth. “Great product” reviews are nearly worthless. We coach customer success teams to ask reviewers to cover specific dimensions, ease of setup, support quality, integration coverage. Those texture-rich reviews are what the model surfaces.

Comparison pages. G2 builds vendor-vs-vendor pages automatically and these get cited. Make sure yours are populated, accurate and that you have asked customers who switched to you to mention that journey.

Badges and reports. Quarterly G2 reports and badges are syndicated widely and become secondary citation sources. Worth chasing.

Capterra has a different shape

Capterra is owned by Gartner and behaves differently. It tends to skew toward SMB buyers and cites less often than G2, but its category roundup pages are widely syndicated through Software Advice and other Gartner properties. We treat it as a complementary asset, not a substitute.

The interesting bit about Capterra is its filter pages. ” for small business”, ” for healthcare”, ” with X integration”. These narrow filters are exactly the kind of long-tail prompt LLMs are answering, and being well-rated within those filtered views translates directly into citation share.

How this connects to your own site

Strong G2 and Capterra profiles do not let you off the hook on your own site. The citation pattern we see is usually two or three sources cited together, often G2 plus the vendor’s own product page plus one community source. So your product pages need to ship with the same care.

That means clear positioning, schema and the structured comparison content that makes the model’s job easy. The review request mechanic that actually works

Most B2B firms run review programmes that fail. The classic pattern is an annual mass email asking for reviews, which gets ignored. The pattern that works:

  1. Identify the customer success milestones where satisfaction is highest. First successful deployment, first quarterly business review with positive metrics, renewal.
  2. Trigger the review request inside seven days of that milestone, ideally from the human account manager rather than a generic system.
  3. Make the ask specific. “Could you cover ease of setup and support response time, those are the dimensions other buyers ask us about most.”
  4. Offer reciprocity that does not violate platform rules, usually a small donation to a charity of their choice or a credit on their next renewal.

This is unsexy operational work. It also outperforms every clever growth marketing tactic we have seen for moving G2 and Capterra performance.

What we are watching

A few uncertainties we are upfront about:

Platform changes. Both G2 and Capterra adjust their algorithms and category structures regularly. The citation patterns we see this quarter may shift as the platforms re-engineer their pages or as LLMs update their retrieval weights.

Sector coverage gaps. For some niche B2B categories, G2 simply does not have enough listings to be a useful citation. We have to fall back on industry-specific directories, which behave differently.

The IT services question. G2 and Capterra are software-focused. For services-led firms, the equivalent platforms are Clutch and TrustRadius, which do not yet show the same citation density. Our piece on AI search optimisation for IT services firms covers that case.

A short prioritisation

If you have to pick where to start, the order we use:

  1. Audit your current G2 and Capterra profiles for completeness and category placement
  2. Set up a structured review request flow tied to customer milestones
  3. Refresh comparison page content where you know vendor-vs-vendor prompts matter
  4. Run a monthly LLM citation audit to see where the platforms are pulling for your category
  5. Pitch for inclusion in G2’s quarterly reports relevant to your space

This is one of the highest-leverage areas in AI search right now. It is also the area where the work compounds quietly across every category surface that depends on the same review data.
